An anagram generator is, as its name suggests, a piece of software (web-based or PC-based) to help make anagrams - you enter one or more words, or even a complete phrase, and it will rearrange words to help you create a variety of funny anagrams, celebrity anagrams, anagrams of names, or whatever it is you want.

Why would you want to use anagram generators?

Well, one very common usage is in cryptic crosswords. (For those who aren't familiar with this type of crossword, which are maybe more popular in the United Kingdom than in the USA, the answers are not just straight synonyms of the clue, as is the case with many crossword puzzles. Instead, the answers require a bit of brainwork, maybe some lateral thinking, and an understanding of the "rules" of cryptic crosswords.)

So, here's a clue where the answer is an anagram of just part of that clue:

Oddly, he hoped an earpiece would appear (9)

The answer is "headphone", which is an anagram of the words "he hoped an" (and you can tell that this is an anagram type clue by the word "oddly", which is one of many ways of telling the solver to look out for an anagram - cryptic crosswords usually contain an "indicator" that tells you what type of clue it is, as there are many different types of cryptic clues).

Another popular use of anagrams is in competitions, where there will be a whole series of anagrams, usually on a common theme and often name anagrams of famous people.

For example, I once put together a competition for one of the magic clubs I belong to, where all of the answers were related to magic (e.g. names of famous magicians, both past and present, magic tricks, magic props).

One anagram in that competition was "be nocturnal", which is an anagram of the famous magician, Lance Burton.

But perhaps the main reason why people might be looking for an anagram creator is that they simply want to have a bit of fun.

They want to see what they can make from their own names, or the names of family members, friends, work colleagues, TV shows and characters, as well as, of course, celebrities.
